Do Commercials Use Subliminal Messages
Do you really know what subliminal messages are?Have subliminal messages ever been used in commercials? Have you ever decided to buy a product because you were following a hidden command embeded in an ordinary commercial? Can these messages really be used to direct your behaviour?
The most common form of subliminal messages are as spoken commands that are used to affect the mind at a subconscious level. The word “sub” is Latin and means anything that is underneath or below. A typical example of this would be sub-marine – because it operates underneath the ocean. In the word “subliminal” the second part is also taken from a Latin word – the word “limen”. This Latin word actually means threshold and it is used to represent the threshold between two states of conscious. Therefore “subliminal” means “beneath the threshold of normal consciousness”.
Therefore subliminal messages are “messages that are delivered or accepted underneath the threshold of normal consciousness. Subliminal messages are really just any kind of message that is embedded in another medium so that they go unnoticed by the conscious mind.
It is believed that these messages can be either auditory or visual in nature. They can affect the subconscious mind in a positive or negative way in such a way that they have an effect on later behaviours, thoughts, feelings and attitudes. In fact any type of sustained exposure to subliminal messages or subliminal programming can have a dramatic affect on a person’s entire belief and value systems.
The earliest study of the subject of subliminal messages dates back to 1898 when E.W. Scripture published the paper The New Psychology. Although there have been many studies and experiments with subliminal messages the most widely known is the case study by James Vicary. Vicary’s 1957 experiment, conducted in a movie theatre, was the first attempt at using subliminal messages for advertising purposes.
He claimed that by flashing the words “eat popcorn” and “drink coke” sales of the two products rose significantly amongst the movie-goers. His results were never duplicated regardless of many attempts and in later years Vicary admitted that his findings were falsified.
However, the damage was already done and subliminal advertising had entered the public psyche, were later outlawed from television and radio by several countries in 1973 and even investigated by the CIA in 1958!
Although Vicary’s experiment was a fraud modern research, using the latest technologies have shown that subliminal messages can affect the brain. Scientists are still reluctant to confirm or deny that these type of hidden commands can act as a means for controlling behaviour.
Take a look at some video sites such as YouTube or Google Videos and you will see videos that contain a selection of subliminal advertisements.
The fact that multi-billion dollar companies, with huge advertising budgets, have deliberately embedded certain words and visual images into their advertisements gives one rise to believe that they must have some impact on our behaviours when it comes to purchasing goods!
In fact many illusionists, such as the British born Derren Brown, use subliminal messages extensively to perform seemingly magical feats of mind reading and mental manipulation.
In the field of personal development and self growth subliminal messages are used in a wide range of products. Many people swear by their effectiveness and there are many examples of how people have changed their lives through the use of subliminal messages. However, it has not been proven, nor has it been disproved, that they affect our buying decisions in any way. We will just have to wait for more research from the scientific community to get clearer on that point. We will just have to wait for further research.

Five Ways that Hypnosis Helps you to Be A Winner at your Game
There are five ways that hypnosis helps people to win at their chosen sport. They are: 1. developing a winning attitude, 2. developing motivation to persist, 3. developing an image of the winning game, 4. developing a plan to get from where you are to the winning game and 5. Feeling the success so it can become real to you. The hypnosis session incorporates all five of these in each session to complete the success picture. This is necessary so you can feel and believe in your success.
The first is the winning attitude. When I was very young, I failed at many subjects and would consistently bring home a report card full of d’s and f’s. Then my mother sat me down and discussed something that I will always remember. She told me that life is much like a river. If you do nothing the currents of time will drag you backward. However, if you push against the flow and make a difference, you will become a success. I felt that she was just giving me one of her famous lectures, but I felt that being punished was getting old. So I tried her philosophy and the next semester, I achieved the honor role.
- Secondly, persistence is necessary to help you maintain the momentum despite failures that may come along the way. Thomas Edison failed 9,999 times prior to succeeding on the 10,000th time to create the electric light bulb. He told people that his failures taught him 9,999 ways that it would not work. By experiencing the so-called failures, he was able to find his success.
Third is the image of the winning game. This is important because unless you can imagine a thing, belief is not developed. When you can imagine yourself winning at your game with a clear image in your mind, it becomes easier to develop a belief in yourself. When I was working on getting good grades, I needed to create an image in my mind of getting the a’s and experiencing the pride of my parents as they read my reportcard. I didn’t know it then, but what I was doing then was indeed self hypnosis.
The fourth thing that is necessary to become a winner is to develop a plan of how you will get from where you are to where you want to be. It is easier to take a trip in new territory with a GPS or a road map than to go into the unknown without a plan. You can chart your progress along the way to prevent discouragement if you have a clear plan. For instance, to get the good grades, I planned to do the hardest courses first, to get good sleep, to pay attention in class, and to keep track of my improved test scores along the way. In this way, I executed my plan for success.
Finally, you feel the success before you actually experience it. This tricks your mind and makes you feel good. Your mind does not know the difference between an imagined success and a real one. As long as you get the good feelings that success creates, you increase your drive to go on. When you use hypnosis to win at your game, your progress is accelerated. You are using all five of the necessary steps to become successful in every forty-five minute session. You place these ideas into your subconscious mind where they can blossom into your success.
