Hypnosis Using the Subjects Own Language
It’s not what you mean, it’s what they understand.
The skilled hypnotist speaks to the subject in the language that the subject understands. By this we mean the language of the unconscious mind, the trance state mind. Different people interpret information in different ways. So the hypnotist spends some time trying to find out what effect certain words, certain movements, certain, language structures have on the subject.
A lot of this has to do with connotation and denotation. Words whether spoken or written have two meanings. There is the denotative meanting; the actual thing that is being referred to. So for example a table is a specific thing. “Please move the table”. There is also a connotative meaning; what the table implies, how it functions in the subjects mind. With a physical object such as a table it is fairly straight forward. A table is something we put something upon. It might be used for eating. It might have chairs around it. But what do we mean when we say “please table the item” That’s connotation.
It’s all about connotation.
The use of connotation becomes interesting if we ask someone to imagine tasing a lemon. Some people will tell you what it tastes like. Others will make a strong physical reaction. Others will describe in detail the flavors, smells and feeling of lemon in the mouth. Each of these persons reacts in a way that they are receptive. So a person who makes a physical grimace but who says little else is probably more easy approached through the physical channels. But you have to be very cautious, a person who is physical my react positively to a light touch but they could just as easily react negatively. the hypnotist knows this and has different tools for different reactions.
Sometimes the language is at a deeper lever beyond words. This is where the concept of body language became popular.
It’s not just the words.
“Body language is a term for communication using body movements or gestures instead of, or in addition to, sounds, verbal language or other communication. It forms part of the category of paralanguage, which describes all forms of human communication that are not verbal language. This includes the most subtle of movements that many people are not aware of, including winking and slight movement of the eyebrows. In addition body language can also incorporate the use of facial expressions.” Wikipedia.
In hypnosis the way to utilize this form of communication is through the technique of mirroring. Mirroring is exactly what it sounds like, the hypnotist subtly mirrors, mimics, the actions of the other. They get in sync with the person and then when they are ready will begin to take control of the mirroring by initiating an action and forcing the subject to mirror them. These types of techniques are often recommended for job interviews. But be aware that most managers are aware of the techniques and it takes a skilled practitioner to use them without breaking the flow of communication.
Much of mirroring is done at a very subtle level, you may mirror someone’s breathing or a slight droop of their shoulder. Mirroring is effective but it requires patience and skill. Skills that can be learned but must also be practiced.
